What is a Fortified Wine and What are its types?

Fortified wines are made by adding grape-based alcohol or neutral brandy during fermentation. This increases their alcohol content and helps them last longer. In Spanish, they are known as vinos generosos, meaning “generous wines.”

Highlights:

  • Fortified wines are known for their high alcohol content, usually ranging from 19% to 22% ABV.
  • Adding grape spirit during production halts fermentation, creating a sweeter wine.
  • Well-known examples include Sherry, Port, and Madeira.
  • These wines, often called liqueur or generous wines, are crafted for their unique and distinct flavors.
